I love tea. Like really LOVE tea. And I am lucky enough to work for a tea company in which I figuratively skip to work where its about something I like- no love (!)- talking about & I love to tell people all about Plymouth Tea.
We're a small business based in Plymouth, Devon who sell a range of quality teas in both teabag & loose leaf. The business was started about 4 years ago by my boss, Ross, who wanted to create a tea company that championed the adventurous & proudly British character that is so strong in Plymouth. He designed three original blends to start the business with - Drake, Armada & Mayflower which are the three I will talk about here. They are three black leaf teas which means it is the most oxidised out of the varieties of tea you get & therefore is generally the strongest of them all. Within the black leaf banner there is a huge range of different blends - English Breakfast, English Afternoon, Earl Grey, Darjeeling, Assam, Keemun & many many more! However most people think that 'tea' is just one type of drink & one type of flavour so they always try to categorise the three original blends to make them similar to PG Tips, Twinings, Yorkshire, when actually even those brands have many different blends. But the reason there are the three original blends is so that we can offer customers the best cup of tea for the different ways that people drink their tea. All the three blends are a blend of Kenyan, Chinese & Assam leaves designed to have a lower tannin content which makes them so easy to drink without the bitter or filmy taste that you get with some low grade teas.
In the pictures of the brewed tea, you can't tell a huge difference between the three as they are all black leaf blends so will be fairly similar. However by comparing flavour you can definitely tell the difference between them.
So Drake first, a strong full-bodied tea, most similar to and English Breakfast, a great full flavour & perfect for waking you up in the morning. If you like a strong cup & you like to let your teabag stay brewing in your teacup for a long time then this is a great blend for you! It's got the full flavour of a Breakfast blend but doesn't have the bitterness that you do get with some blends.
Armada is a lovely medium blend, with a higher Assam content so its still go a great base flavour & a lovely bright red coloured. It's great for those who are not big tea drinkers or are only just starting to get into the beverage. It was my first favourite when I started working for Plymouth Tea, it's like drinking a proper cup of tea & doesn't taste at all plastic or chemically.

Now Mayflower is my now personal favourite. I can't have a lot of milk in my tea & not a massive fan of big heavy flavoured & prefer more lighter green blends but I am partial to the occasional black leaf blend & this perfectly hits it. Its not too strong so doesn't need a lot of milk (I tend to measure mine at one & a half tablespoons for an small sized mug) but still has that lovely 'tea' flavour that you can tend to miss with more afternoon style blends. It is perfect for when your eating cakes or something light & don't want your drink overpowering it.
There's nothing radically different or unusual about these blends, they are just (as the title suggests) three really good & decent cups of tea. You can get them in both loose leaf & tea bags on our website which is again great if your looking to expand your tea drinking habits & try something new.
Apart from getting to talk about these great teas, excitingly for me, we are proud to share (with anyone who will listen) that we are now growing our own tea in Devon & we are the first to do so. There are a couple sites across the UK who are growing ( I'll talk about that another time) but we thought why couldn't we do that as well? At the moment all our blends are imported leaves that are blended & packaged in the South West but soon we will have our very own leaves to add the blends too! To explain the whole story, I'll do a whole post about us growing in Devon!
Now time to put the kettle on again..........
